We have been working through the Homestead Science curriculum by Kody Hanner as part of the topics we study.
November was focused on companion animals and predators on the homestead. Chris and Becky Miller brought their dog, Piper, to the schoolhouse one morning to share about the benefits of training dogs to follow commands for various jobs. The kids all had the chance to give Piper commands as she showed off her skills. They were eager to praise her and give lots of attention.

All eyes were on Chris as he showed the students different tools used in training dogs for a job.

The students all took turns hiding a scented tennis ball so Piper could demonstrate her keen sense of smell and how it helps her accomplish tasks.

Piper received lots of praise for following through on the commands the kids gave her.

After the rain lightened up, we went outside where Piper had room to really run and retrieve.

The kids each took a turn having Piper heel and sit. We had the chance to see how she communicated back to everyone as she was eager to please.
It was wonderful to have our first guest educators visit and we look forward to welcoming more community members in the coming weeks.
