January

January has been a season of winter wonder and steady learning at Juneberry Hill. Cold days invited us outdoors to move, notice, and explore, as students slid down the hill in their snowsuits like penguins, discovered frozen creations and observed how the world is slowly preparing for spring. Inside the schoolhouse, our days were grounded in kindness, curiosity, and practicing how to work together as thoughtful friends to all.

In our studies, students spent time learning about mammals through The Good and the Beautiful unit, discovering what makes mammals unique and ending the month with a mammal art project. We also explored how our bodies work together through a focus on the skeletal and muscular systems, including joints and tendons, laying the groundwork for more body systems next month. Our hands stayed busy building a classroom greenhouse in preparation for seed starting and garden planning in February and later in the spring. Students had so much fun working together on this project and everyone did a great job accomplishing the task at hand!

In our music studies, we began a unit on songs from around the world, learning Frère Jacques from France and Che Che Koolay from West Africa, and practicing rounds and call-and-response singing.

January has been full of observation, creativity, and quiet preparation for the season ahead, and we look forward to continuing this work together as winter slowly gives way to spring.
